Blepharoplasty is a treatment to remove droopiness and bagginess under the eyes. Treatment includes removing of excess fat, skin and muscle around the eyes. It will help you to remove "crow's feet" and can remove the dark circles under the eyes. Blepharoplasty may be performed with in 2-3 hours, but sometimes a night stay in hospital is required. This surgery can be done under normal anesthesia, which means patient will be asleep during the treatment and will feel no pain. Alternatively, it can be done with local anesthesia, in this case the area around eyes will be numb but patient will be awake. Your surgeon will advise you for the anesthesia which is most suitable for you. He will explain what you can expect from blepharoplasty treatment.

For treatment on the upper eyelids, surgeon will creases in the lid and make cuts into the natural lines and into the laughter lines of your eye.

For treatment on the lower eyelids, surgeon usually makes a cut below your eyelashes. It is concealing the scars run along your eye's natural folds as much as possible.

Excess fats and muscles are removed including loose skin and the cut is then closed with fine stitches. If there is no excess skin, then surgeon only needs to remove fat and the cut is made inside the lower eyelid with no visible scar. The operation takes about two to three hours, or less if you're having either upper or lower eyelid surgery.

After the treatment, there should be bruising and swelling for up to three weeks. This might make problem to close your eyes when you go to sleep and make your eyes feel tight. For the first week, your eyes may feel itchy, dry and sticky. And they may also become watery for a few weeks.

Blepharoplasty is a generally performed and safe treatment. However, all surgeries have risks as well as benefits.

There are few complications in blepharoplasty too. A specific complication includes a pool of blood formed under the skin around your eyes (haematoma). This blood need to be drained if it doesn't disappear on its own.

In some rare case, there may be a possibility that swelling on your eyes will pulled away lower lid from your eye. This usually settles itself after few days and patients need another operation in rare case. The complications depend on the type of blepharoplasty treatment you have done and your general health. It is important with any cosmetic surgery treatment, that you should consult your expectations thoroughly with your surgeon before you decide to proceed for surgery.
