Blepharoplasty procedure

Blepharoplasty procedure for many, is the procedure for looking younger and more alert. For others, it is a welcome option for restoring vision that has become obscured.

It is a functional or cosmetic surgical procedure aiming to reshape the upper or lower eyelid by the removal and/or repositioning of excess tissue as well as by reinforcement of surrounding muscles and tendons. Sometimes, in case excessive skin in there, the skin may hang over the eyelashes and cause of loss of peripheral vision causing difficulty in activities such as driving or reading.

Blepharoplasty procedure involves external incisions, after the surgeon has marked the individual lines and creases of the lids in order to keep the scars as invisible as possible along these natural folds. With these incisions, the surgeon separates the skin from underlying fatty tissue and muscle, removes excess fat, and often trims sagging skin and muscle. The incisions are then closed with very fine sutures. They are also self-dissolving and leave no visible scar.

These incisions are carried into the eyelid skin, such as the creases of the upper lids and below the lashes of the lower lids, or from the inside surface of the lower eyelid. Blepharoplasty procedure carried out in this way can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below ones eyes. Blepharoplasty procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia (Which is used to numb the area around the eyes) along with some kind of sedatives. The patient is awake during the surgery, but relaxed and insensitive to pain. In some conditions doctors need to take care while performing the surgery. These conditions include thyroid problems such as hypothyroidism and Graves' disease, dry eye or lack of sufficient tears, high blood pressure or other circulatory disorders, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. A detached retina or glaucoma is also considered a risky situation. Another variant known as Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty Procedure involves removing lower eyelid fat through an incision on the back of the eyelid, eliminating the need for an external incision. Because there is no external incision, excess skin can not be removed during the surgery, but skin resurfacing with a chemical peel or carbon dioxide laser may be performed simultaneously. This allows for a faster recovery process. Eyelid puffiness caused primarily by excess fat may be corrected by this Blepharoplasty Procedure variant.

Immediately following Blepharoplasty Procedure, the incision sites will look red and irritated and there may be some minor bumpiness. The scarring from the Blepharoplasty procedure should flatten in time and become inconspicuous. There will be some swelling and discoloration around patient's eyes, but this will fade and the patient begin to look and feel better with each day. The swelling and bruising (If there) takes not more than one to two weeks to disappear. Most people feel ready to go out in public (and back to work) in a week to 10 days. The final results of Blepharoplasty procedure are visible in few months time. The duration of this process is one to three hours but it entirely depends upon the scope of the procedure.
